She Can Scream She Can Series Book 3 edition by Melinda Leigh Romance eBooks
This book, just as all of Melinda Leigh's series books, is a great stand alone read, but even better when the whole series is read (that much more of her books to read!). I love how the characters are normal, the person next door types, and how they come across as someone who could be one of my own neighbors. I also love a good 'who done it' book, and these books are definitely that. As an avid reader since I was a child, I've always been pretty good at figuring out who 'done it', but with Melinda Leigh's books, they throw me off almost every single time. But I like not being able to figure out who the killer is, because when I do it tends to make the rest of the book too predictable. I love the way she writes her story lines, the way she incorporates the characters, and the way she carries some of them into the next book. She is truly a great aughor! Now, with that said, and if I'm going to give a totally honest, complete review of her books, I have to add the part I don't care for. Well, you DID ask for all of it. ;)
The reason I didn't give her books a five star rating is due to how the lead male and lead female characters always seem to notice the other's beauty, handsomeness, sexiness, figure/body build, full lips, beautiful hair, intense eye color, etc., at first sight, even during a life threatening crisis. In real life, it just doesn't work that way, and certainly not with both the male and the female being hit with an instant and incredibly strong attraction and sexual desire for each other, and with both of them telling themselves "I can't/won't get involved/fall in love, etc. just before they give in to their 'intense desire' for each other and then live happily ever after. And this seems to happen in every single book. So if that part can be toned down a bit, and in a more realistic manner where maybe they don't even like each other at first, that would make the books a definite five star read.

She Can Scream She Can Series Book 3 edition by Melinda Leigh Romance eBooks Reviews
I really like that She Can Scream is a very modern story. The potential dangers of social media are highlighted and are very real. This added a whole other layer of believability to the plot.
Brooke is the heroine, and she's still struggling with a tragedy that occurred years ago. I like how she's trying to keep her friends memory alive, but at the same time it seemed like she was punishing herself and unable to move forward in a lot of ways.
Luke, the hero, is Brooke's brother Wade's friend and he's in town for a week to visit with his Grandma. Luke is broken inside too. He has his own hauntings that make moving on and living life difficult for him.
These two come together first out of a sense of protectiveness on Luke's side when he promised Wade he'd look out for Brooke and her kids, but as danger gets closer, things start to heat up between Luke and Brooke also. I liked these two main characters. On the surface they are very different, but once I got to know them better the more and more it was like they belonged together. Can he help Brooke stay safe even as she tries to investigate what the police are already investigating? And what about the future? Present day circumstances and being together force Brooke and Luke to take more steps away from the past and into the future, but will they have a chance together?
At times Brooke was frustrating because she was so entrenched in survivor's guilt, then guilt through association with what is happening now...and she is determined to find out who the attacker is, even when it's not safe for her to be digging into the investigation. It was back and forth a lot for me with how I felt about Brooke because at times I felt like she needed to think about her and her kids safety first and foremost instead of thrusting herself into the eyes of a crazed person. I really liked Luke, something about him just pulled to me. He's protective but not over the top protective, and he takes things seriously. I liked the relationship he has with his Grandma. I liked how through She Can Scream both characters really grew and were strongly developed.
The intense and suspenseful plot of She Can Scream had great build up, it was thrilling, and Melinda kept me guessing. I could not figure out the 'who'! Melinda held my interest and made me want to stay in the pages of the book.
Melinda writes She Can Scream in 3 POV's which was fascinating! She gave brief glimpses into a madman's mind...enough to certainly give me chills but not enough to turn me off of reading. I liked having both Brooke and Luke's POV, this really helped me get into their minds.
The secondary characters are all very relevant to the plot, and I liked how we got a few glimpses of Brooke's ex-husband but weren't overwhelmed by their past. I also really liked her kids, they are a good side part of the story, with no drama from them which was a relief for me as a reader.
She Can Scream is fast paced and dangerous. I liked the slow growth of the relationship between Brooke and Luke, the uncertainty of the future for them as a couple, and how this is subtly woven into a suspenseful, edgy plot. She Can Scream is part of a series but can definitely be read as a stand alone (like I did). I'd recommend She Can Scream to any romantic suspense reader.
I can appreciate this book winning the 2014 Golden Leaf Award. A fast-moving, gut-twisting suspense with vulnerable women being targeted by a thoroughly evil man kept me caught until late into the evening. High school math teacher Brooke saves a young woman from an assault and the assailant was not apprehended. Add in a handsome helpful brother's best friend, a determined police department, odd colleagues and tension that never stops -- a masterful thriller races to a fine conclusion. Few red herrings and little other clues thwarted my meager attempts at fingering the bad guy. Fine by me. I like a story that prevents my easily knowing the finale. Ms. Leigh builds believable characters and life settings involving all her characters in each of her books. It provides a great reading experience. I am off to read book 4, "She Can Hide."
Melinda Leigh’s books all seem to follow the same formula
1. Strong, fierce, independent woman ends up in jeopardy in spite of her strength, fierceness, and independence
2. Strong, handsome man enters the picture
3. The two people have never experienced such attraction to another and fall in love in less than a week
4. The man becomes obsessed with protecting the woman in jeopardy and saves her at the last minute
5. They live happily ever after
I honestly don’t know how the author continues to get these books published or why I have kept reading them. Oh wait, it’s because I bought a bunch at one time at a cheaper price and now feel compelled to read them because I paid for them.
It’s not that she’s a bad writer. She just tells the same story over and over again. There is no originality to her story telling. She also comes across to me as a bit misogynistic with these women in jeopardy books.
